Pets

There is no quarantine of pets coming into Ukraine, but dogs and cats must have all shots brought up-to-date a minimum of 30 days prior to departure. Cargo carriers must meet FAA standards. American carriers require that the animal is able to stand up and turn around with ease, and that the carrier is ventilated on all four sides. If you are bringing more than one pet, each animal is required to have it’s own carrier. For more specific information, please call your airline carrier well in advance of travel.

An international health certificate proving rabies and distemper vaccinations is required. If transiting in Germany without a layover, you may be required to exit the airport into Germany and re-enter to recheck your pet for the flight to Kyiv. German authorities will check your documents. If you stay over night in Germany, the documentation requirements may be more complicated, so please consult with your airline.

Veterinary care and immunizations are available locally. Dogs should be immunized annually against distemper, rabies, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis and parainfluenza. A tick-borne disease (piroplazmosis) is especially dangerous for dogs in Kyiv so bring flea/tick collars (available locally) and repellents. Both dog and cat foods are available locally, however if your dog/cat prefers a certain brand please bring a supply with you. It is also a good idea to bring a small supply of your pet’s needs with you in your luggage.

If you are thinking of getting a pet prior to coming to Kyiv, you may want to wait until you arrive. There are many pure bred animals for sale here at very reasonable prices. Ukrainians tend to prefer larger breeds but smaller dogs and many cats are readily available.

The city of Kiev (Kyiv) is both the capital and the largest city of Ukraine.
